Toyin Adekale, singer/songwriter/actress and now author, born in London to West African parents, had a successful career in music as a singer/songwriter, traveling all over the world (covering 5 of 7 continents), performing for Kings & Queens, Presidents & Prime Ministers and dignitaries. Her platform was as varied as her life from clubs, theatres and stadiums, to Palaces and State buildings such as the Houses of Parliament in London, St James Palace, to the Kremlin in Russia. Toyin lists amongst her many highlights, singing the National Anthem for Nigeria’s Eagles Soccer Team at London’s QPR grounds against the infamous Jamaica Reggae Boyz, as one of many cherished moments, not to mention a brief encounter with legendary inspiration, Diana Ross and interviewing the late great Bob Marley’s Mother, Cedella Booker.
Toyin Adekale’s career started at the tender age of 15 as a solo artist, where she also discovered her gift for harmony. Having sung with most of the reggae greats from Dennis Brown, Delroy Wilson, Beres Hammond, Ken Boothe, Freddie McGregor, Sanchez and Gregory Isaacs, her gifts were sought by other genre’s where she became vocal coordinator/arranger and backing vocalist to the likes of Soul II Soul, Imagination, Cliff Richard, Maxi Priest, Carmel, Dave Stuart (Eurythmics), Gabrielle and sharing the stage with so many great names too numerous to mention.
During Toyin’s solo career she was the fourth member of world renowned Boney M (featuring Maizie Williams for 13 years). Through the entity of music, Toyin was drawn into theater through actor/director, Larrington Walker (from whom many great names aspired), taking her into more demanding lead roles with a list of successful plays behind her both in the UK and US.
At this point, Toyin was motivated to pen her own play and thereafter her first book of short stories, “I Do, Do You?” In 2005 Toyin Adekale came to the US with her children, putting her career, family and fans behind her to live a somewhat “normal life” of motherhood and a total change of lifestyle. In the first 2 years of Toyin’s transitioning to American life, she also faced some serious life changing challenges, dealing with health, divorce, children and helplessness brought on by life issues.
During this time Toyin found a new calling on her life and an overwhelming desire to cause positive change and effect in other people’s lives. Toyin had touched people with her music in the past, but not the way she now desired. Toyin’s writing skills and theatre experience, now combined with her musical background. Toyin was no longer merely pursuing a career of fame and fortune, she had once tasted. but adding a new path that is now pursuing her.
Toyin Adekale wore many belts as an artist. Founder/Director of the UK’s first reggae choir ‘Talithavoices’; CEO of label and Arts & Entertainments Company, Talithavoices Enterprise, an umbrella of all forms of artistic expression in the name of entertaining, whilst improving lives. Following the sad loss of Toyin’s 21 year old son, in May 2018, and her Mother to Corona in April 2020, Toyin’s promise to them, before they left, has motivated her to push forward in bringing love, light and revelation, to all she encounters. As the pages unfold, inspirational stories are told in her book (with a single of the same title “I DO, DO YOU?“
“THE JOURNEY CONTINUES” – The devastating loss of Toyin’s 21 year old son, took her on a roller coaster of overwhelming pain, that would take Toyin to a crossroad in her life. Her parting conversation with Bakari (the youngest of her 2 children), was to encourage her to follow the path that he believes God has cut out for her, to continue her music and inspiring others, to get back to her purpose and her passion. All injected into this 14 track album. Here Toyin gives some deep insight into some of the songs:
“Raining Abundance H&H Mix” taken from the album “THE JOURNEY CONTINUES”, is a reminder to one and all that some of these stirrings are not always good ideas, but God Ideas. God has put this in you because you have a purpose for the gifts he has given you. Stepping out in faith, he will “Order Your Steps”, and place the next provision to accomplish this with every faith step you take, but “Faith without Action is Dead”, so your faith action will ignite the next steps. This might well be where your abundance lies. Will there be hurdles? Of course there will, but hurdles are diversions, but they are NOT permanent.
Ask any athlete, they’re for getting over and sometimes, knocking down…but don’t give up. Soulful, Jazzy overtones on this easy listening reggae, that engages you to listen, but grooves move you to rock, whilst touching you with warmth that you can relate to, regardless of your musical tastes. Toyin Adekale’s voice has always floated effortlessly over Soul, Jazz and her first love of Reggae, bringing you to the core of her lyrics.
“THANK YOU MAMA” Toyin always writes close to home and tells not only her feelings, but yours too. Who wouldn’t want to say ‘Thank You’ to that special parent who made sacrifices for you.
“ADDICTIVE LOVE”, the icing on the cake of testimonies. Roger Samuels (The Voice UK’s semi finalist), features on this track, coming full circle to when Toyin first met Roger, whilst teaching vocal lessons and performance in South London. Then a young man who had no idea of the talent buried in him, they reunite as family man and a powerhouse of a vocalist. In this reunion, Roger shares the impact Toyin had on him those many years ago and now they’re together sharing the reason for the season. Watch out for the interviews that tell it all. The highs and lows, the love gains and lives lost, the pain has propelled the project to its’ purpose. If you’re reading this, it’s not over, you’re not down and out. Get up, brush off, listen, dance and enjoy because……“THE JOURNEY CONTINUES”.
